The company bike compared with a pay rise
A company bike made available by the employer is a benefit whose value social security guidance disregards (Bulletin officiel de la sécurité sociale (French official social security bulletin), benefits in kind, paragraph 945, enforceable since 1 June 2026): in practice, nothing is added to the employee's taxable net. It therefore gives the employee a gain in purchasing power that the employer could match only at the cost of a markedly heavier gross pay rise. This tool quantifies the gap for three salary profiles, after corporate tax, that is, on the only basis that allows an honest comparison. Page updated as at 20 August 2026.

The rent of 287.60 euros and what it really costs
The monthly fee taken as the reference is 287.60 euros incl. VAT, over thirty-six months, for a Tern GSD R14 with its preventive maintenance package, batteries excluded and insurance excluded, with no larger first rent. This is the value at the default residual value of 20 per cent; the comparator's residual-value selector replays the whole comparison at 10 per cent (312.68 euros) and at 1 per cent (335.26 euros), with the salary equivalences recalculated each time. This is not an amount we are quoting you: it is the value produced, for this configuration, by the published schedule of the lease calculator, every parameter of which is sourced and editable. Two mechanisms can reduce its real cost for the employer: the first applies to any deductible expense, the second is a scenario to be activated.
The first is the deduction of the rent from the corporate tax base, like any operating expense. The second is the tax reduction under article 220 undecies A du code général des impôts (French general tax code), equal to the costs generated by making a fleet of bikes available free of charge, capped at 25 per cent of the purchase or rental price of that fleet. This reduction requires that it be free of charge for the employee : any contribution required causes it to be lost. The scheme applies to costs incurred up to 31 December 2027.
The eligibility of a fleet financed under a finance lease for this reduction is not established to date. We therefore do not present it as a secured advantage: the comparator does not apply it by default, the selector at the top of the page makes it possible to activate it as a scenario, and this point must be settled with your adviser before any commitment.
The anatomy of the cost of a pay rise
A pay rise does not cost its gross amount. It costs more than that, for a reason that simulators almost always forget: beyond employer social contributions, it erodes the general reduction in employer social contributions (réduction générale), whose coefficient decreases as the salary rises. This third tier is invisible on a payslip and yet weighs heavily on salaries close to the SMIC (French minimum wage).
That is what explains the counter-intuitive ranking of the three profiles: the difference is not greatest for the manager, whose loss of reduction is almost nil, but it remains very high for the employee, where each euro of gross paid costs the company 1.81.
This calculator and the lease calculator do not answer the same thing
The lease calculator starts from a bike model, a fleet size and a term, and reproduces the logic of a finance lease schedule on published, sourced and editable assumptions, on a self-service basis. It answers the sizing question.
The comparator on this page starts instead from a rent that is already built: 287.60 euros incl. VAT at the default residual value of 20 per cent, that is the rent this same schedule produces for a Tern GSD R14 on its own, over thirty-six months, preventive maintenance package included, with no larger first rent. It answers a different question: once the tax mechanisms are applied, does this rent cost more or less than a pay rise that would give the employee the same immediate gain.
On this configuration, the two tools therefore display the same rent. One clarification, for honesty's sake: the calculator opens by default on the Tern GSD S10, whose rent per bike is lower than that of an R14 on its own; the match holds only at identical configuration. If the actual rent of your fleet differs from the reference, the cost of the bike is recalculated in proportion, but not the equivalent pay rise: the latter depends on the tapering curve of the general reduction, which is not linear. That is why the reference rent is adjusted here only through the residual value, with the same three values as the lease calculator, 1, 10 and 20 per cent, each with its own recalculated salary equivalences: for any other assumption, work the lease calculator.
The site has two other tools. The employee simulator answers the mirror question to this one: in the pay rise branch, an employee who equips themselves can draw on the mobility allowance, up to 600 euros a year, which a fleet made available never allows; it is that precise case that it quantifies. The carbon calculator extends every answer with the same question, in volumes and never in euros. The question of the benefit in kind (avantage en nature), seen from the employee's side, is dealt with on the dedicated page.
The role of Wander Fleet, and what it is not
Wander SAS operates Wander Fleet and acts as a business introducer to Île-de-France companies equipping their teams with electrically assisted cargo bikes. The financing is provided by a leasing company, separate from Wander. Wander grants no financing, is neither a credit institution nor a financing company, is not an intermediary in banking operations and payment services, is not registered with ORIAS (French register of insurance and banking intermediaries) and gives no credit advice. Our involvement is that of the mere introducer (simple indicateur) referred to at 2° of article R. 519-2 du code monétaire et financier (French monetary and financial code). The reference rent used here, 287.60 euros at the default residual value of 20 per cent, is not an amount that Wander is quoting you: it is the value produced, for a named configuration, by the public schedule of the site's lease calculator, on published and editable assumptions. The actual financial terms are communicated to you directly by the institution you select, subject to acceptance of the application.
Frequently asked questions
Can we tell an employee that the bike is equivalent to a pay rise?
No, and this is a precaution of substance. The exact wording is that of the same immediate monthly gain in purchasing power as a gross pay rise of a given amount, for the term of the contract. A pay rise opens deferred rights that the bike does not open, in pension, unemployment insurance and daily sickness benefits, and it is permanent whereas the benefit ceases with the contract. The bike must never be presented as a replacement for salary nor negotiated in place of a pay measure.
Where does the third line, the loss of general reduction, come from?
The general reduction in employer social contributions decreases as remuneration rises, until it falls to nothing. Raising a salary close to the SMIC therefore rolls back that relief, and that roll-back adds to the cost of the pay rise. For the employee on 2,200 euros, it represents 140.80 euros a month, i.e. 35 points of marginal contributions on top of the nominal contributions. For the manager on 4,200 euros, it falls to 25.45 euros. These amounts hold for the schedule at the default residual value of 20 per cent and are recalculated by the selector.
Do these figures apply as they stand to my company?
No. They rest on 2026 payroll rates verified as at 12 July 2026 and on a single employee with one tax share, with a 10 per cent allowance and excluding the low-income rebate (décote). Your occupational accident rate, your local transport levy (versement mobilité) and your headcount change the result. These values are an order of magnitude intended to frame a discussion, to be reset against actual payroll by your chartered accountant or your payroll manager.
What happens if the employee contributes to the cost?
The 25 per cent tax reduction presupposes that it is free of charge for the employee: a contribution causes it to be lost. In return, the contribution opens up the deduction of VAT on the rents, with that tax collected on the contribution. The two levers never combine on the same bike, and the second yields less than the first. Bearing the full cost is therefore preferable as soon as the company has enough corporate tax to absorb the reduction.
Does Wander quote you a rent?
No. The rent used here is produced by the public schedule of the site's lease calculator, on a self-service basis: it is not a quotation that Wander sends you. The binding quotation, the term, the guarantees and the acceptance of the application rest solely with the financial institution you select. Wander presents your application, without being a party to the financing.
